PRAYER POINT: Lord, do new things for us.

I saw this story and from this blog and it spoke to me:

“Do not fear; I will help you.” – Isaiah 41:13

Sometime last week an old friend rang the doorbell. Without hesitation, I opened the door to let him in. “Make yourself comfortable,” I said, which he gladly did. Fear and I sat down, and I listened while he presented a list of logical reasons why this life of full surrender to God could cause me unnecessary stress and difficulty. As always, he was persuasive and convincing, and his reasoning made sense. Fear was also a good listener, nodding sympathetically as I shared my worries with him. After a few hours, Fear smiled and rose to leave, thanking me for my undivided attention and time.

Since Fear was here, I’ve noticed a marked difference in my attitude. My heart has been cold and unyielding. My knees haven’t been bent in prayer. My mind hasn’t been focused on Truth. I shouldn’t be surprised, though. This happens every time I let Fear in the door.

When will I learn that Fear is no friend of mine? Although I can’t keep him from coming to my house, I can control what happens once he shows up. The next time Fear rings the bell, I will refuse to answer the door. Instead of speaking to him, I’ll cry out to God, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You (Psalm 56:3).” By putting my faith in the Lord, I close the door to Fear. He can’t penetrate my heart and my mind when they are guarded in Christ Jesus, my Shield.

Fear is not your friend either. He is a ferocious foe who wants to steal your joy, kill your hope, and destroy your confidence in the Lord. Fear takes great pleasure in tormenting you, even though he appears to have your best interests in mind. He doesn’t come to offer freedom. He wants to enslave you.

However, you don’t have to be afraid of Fear. He has no power in your life unless you give it to him. He’s persistent, though, so keep your eyes open and your heart deadbolted against his attacks. When you hear Fear knocking, remember that the Lord is right there with you. He is waiting for you to call out to Him so He can give you victory over your enemy of Fear.
