Lessons from the bamboo tree on patience

"The rewards of patience and perseverance are illustrated by George Dennison (1935), president of the University of Montana (1910-2010) in this excerpt from a commencement address in 1993. Do you know the story of the Chinese bamboo? After the bamboo is planted, only a tiny shoot is visible. The gardener must tend and nurture the bamboo for four years, while the shoot remains the size of your thumb. For those first four years all the growth takes place underground, unseen, in the plant’s root system. But the gardener perseveres. Knowing the potential of the bamboo, the gardener faithfully waters and fertilizes the almost invisible plant. Finally, in that fifth year, the gardener’s efforts are rewarded as the bamboo grows 80 feet."

"...So what happened?   Did the bamboo tree after four years of inactivity, suddenly shoot up 90 feet in the fifth year? The answer is as clear as a bald head. The tree grew 90 feet in 5 years.  All those years, the tree’s development was taking place in the invisible realm, toiling and budding underground in a massive, fibrous root structure that would eventually become strong enough to support its exponential growth rate. If you had given up earlier, your whole labour would have come to nought. In life, there will be challenging times. You can work on your dreams for weeks, months and even years with no visible signs of progress and then, all of the sudden, things take off. People, who patiently toil towards their dreams and goals, building strong character while overcoming adversity and challenge, grow the strong internal structure to handle success when it eventually comes. Maintain your faith even when you can’t see your rewards in front of you.  Say to yourself, it just hasn’t happened yet!  The most important work is the work that no one can see. ..So keep watering your Chinese Bamboo Tree. Any time, you’re tempted to give up, remind yourself that your day is just around the corner."

The Story of The Chinese Bamboo Tree

Like any plant, growth of the Chinese Bamboo Tree requires nurturing – water, fertile soil, sunshine. In its first year, we see no visible signs of activity. In the second year, again, no growth above the soil. The third, the fourth, still nothing. Our patience is tested and we begin to wonder if our efforts (caring, water, etc.) will ever be rewarded.
And finally in the fifth year – behold, a miracle! We experience growth. And what growth it is! The Chinese Bamboo Tree grows 80 feet in just six weeks!
But let’s be serious, does the Chinese Bamboo Tree really grow 80 feet in six weeks? Did the Chinese Bamboo Tree lie dormant for four years only to grow exponentially in the fifth? Or, was the little tree growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to support its potential for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond? The answer is, of course, obvious. Had the tree not developed a strong unseen foundation it could not have sustained its life as it grew. The same principle is true for people. People, who patiently toil towards worthwhile dreams and goals, building strong character while overcoming adversity and challenge, grow the strong internal foundation to handle success, while get-rich- quickers and lottery winners usually are unable to sustain unearned sudden wealth.
Had the Chinese Bamboo Tree farmer dug up his little seed every year to see if it was growing, he would have stunted the Chinese Bamboo tree’s growth as surely as a caterpillar is doomed to a life on the ground if it is freed from its struggle inside a cocoon prematurely. The struggle in the cocoon is what gives the future butterfly the wing power to fly, just as tension against muscles as we exercise strengthen our muscles, while muscles left alone will soon atrophy.

90 days of prayer: day 1 to 10

Day 1

Lord  cultivate in us a more grateful heart over these next 90 days. I confess my ungrateful spirit. Please forgive me and transform you into a truly thankful person.

Covering ourselves head to toe:

Day 2:
Lord, renew our minds, resulting in a transformed life. (Psalm 119:15, Rom 12:2, 2 Cor.10:5))

Day 3:
Lord, open our eyes to the spiritual truths that You have for us. Help us to see things as You see them. Please guard our eyes from things that make our heart wander away from you and each other. (Psalm 119:18, Psalm 119:37)

Day 4:
Lord, help us to hear Your voice clearly. Give us wisdom to recognize your voice with certainty. Protect us from listening to those who aren’t seeking or walking with You. Guard us from negativity of what others say, and help us discern between good and evil. Thank you for giving us the ability to determine what is of You and what is not. (Is 30:21, 1 Kings 3:9, 1 John 4:1)

Day 5:
Lord, help us to speak the truth in love. Your desire is for us is to be quick to listen and slow to speak – so I pray that you would make that our desire too. Give us courage to lovingly confront when necessary. Let the words we speaks be Yours, not our own. Help us speak words that bring grace and truth to the hearers. Thank you that You want to help him grow in his ability and desire to communicate with you and others. (Psalm 19:14, 119:13, 41:3; Eph 4:15, 4:29; James 1:19)

Day 6:
Lord, instill in our hearts a desire to seek passionately after You. Teach us to guard our hearts with diligence and wisdom. Help us deal with anything in our heart that is not pleasing to You or that separates us from You. Create in us a pure heart, O Lord. Thank you that You are enabling my husband to lead our family with integrity and honor. (Psalm 78:72, 119:10-11; Prov 4:23; 1 Thes 3:13)

Day 7
Lord, I pray everything we do would be done with our whole hearts, serving You rather than man. Seeking to please You alone. I pray You will increase our skills and our abilities so that we might bring honor and glory to you. Let my husband be a good provider for our family. Thank You for blessing everything we put our hands to. (Psalm 24:3-4, Col 3:23)

Day 8
Jesus, I pray we would love Your Words and walk in Your ways. Help us walk in a manner that is worthy of You, bearing fruit in every good work. I pray You’d show us how to creatively share your truth with our kids as we do life with them each day. Father, when we walks through the valley of the shadow of doubt and difficulties, I pray we would fear no evil because we know that you are with us. Thank you for loving and leading us. (Deut 6:7, 8:6, Col 1:10, Psalm 23:4)

Proverbs 31 prayers and declarations

 Day 9
My husband shall have full confidence in me and lack nothing of value. LORD, show me ways that I can give my husband this confidence in me. In every way that you have made me for him, show me how I can be his true companion.

Day 10

I will bring all around me especially my husband+ my family, friends, & colleagues good and not harm, all the days of my life. Help me to think always of how my actions and my words can be good for my husband and not harmful to him. Stop me before I insult him and make me aware of how I hurt him when I am unaware.

Public praise and private criticism

Meaning:
  • never say a bad thing about him outside of our home
ʺI promise, as your mate, that I will never speak ill of you to friend, family, or stranger. I will not embarrass or belittle you in front of others, nor will I be critical of you in your absence. I will not discuss our personal problems with anyone without your permission. This is my pledge to you.ʺsource
